The 1st Race : The Aftermath

Post-Race

I was over the line I had done a triathlon. I enjoyed it and didn’t feel that bad afterwards. I think I could have gone faster. The medal was round my neck I knew immediately I wanted to do more and get more medals. I watched a few other people finish as it was a warm day and I was still cooling  down after the race. Next it was off back to transition to collect my bike, wetsuit and other gear. It was at this point I realised the small plastic crate I had carried everything in pre-race wasn’t ideal for after a race. A quick change into fresh cloths (along with using ½ a tin of deodorant so I didn’t have to smell myself) in the tent provided and I was ready for home.

Getting Home

As I was in my own car by myself it was time for a 4 hour drive home. As it was the end of the day it took an hour to get out of the place grounds through some A roads and onto the motorway. I had spoken to my wife and knew where was a plate of BBQ food and a beer waiting for me at our friends house over the road. The thought of food made my right foot heavy and drove much faster than I intended to and should have been doing. By the time I reached home I was very hungry but also felt very grubby. I jumped into the shower as soon the contents of the car had been dumped in the shed to be sorted out the next day. I think that was one of the best showers I have ever had. Dry and dressed I headed over the road to stuff myself with BBQ and beer and show off my medal .

What Next

As I told the wife that night (when my mouth wasn’t full of food or drink) I want to do more! My mind was made up and the very next day I booked a place at the 1st Brownlee Brothers super sprint triathlon at Fountains Abbey in the September. I wanted something more local and that was the same distance and it fitted the bill. I knew I needed to train more if I was to do more races. Also I decided I needed my own wetsuit and a new bike. The process of getting this new kit would not be easy because of my height (6 foot 6) and my limited total budget for both wetsuit and bike of £500. Rather than training my next challenge would be getting the kit I could afford for the price I wanted!
